Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is essential for providing energy to cells, but to enter these cells, it requires a hormone called insulin. In diabetes, there is a problem with insulin production or its effectiveness, leading to high blood sugar levels.

Risk factors for diabetes include family history, being overweight or obese, lack of physical activity, age (particularly over 45), ethnicity and a history of gestational diabetes.

Recognizing these risk factors is essential for prevention and early detection of diabetes.

There are three main types of diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, resulting in a lack of insulin production. It typically develops in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin therapy.
  • Type 2 diabetes is the most common form, often related to lifestyle factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy diet. In this type, the body becomes resistant to insulin’s effects, leading to inadequate glucose uptake by cells. It is more common in adults but can also occur in children and adolescents.
  • Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when hormonal changes can lead to insulin resistance. While it usually resolves after childbirth, it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life for both the mother and child.

What does Chinese Medicine say

Chinese medicine has a long history of using herbal remedies and other natural approaches to manage various health conditions, including diabetes.

In Chinese medicine, diabetes is often classified as “Xiao Ke,” which can be translated as “wasting and thirsting syndrome.” The treatment approach in Chinese medicine focuses on restoring the balance of Qi (vital energy) and Yin-Yang in the body to alleviate symptoms and improve overall health.

Regarding acupuncture for diabetes, some studies have shown potential benefits. Research suggests that acupuncture may help improve blood sugar levels, enhance insulin sensitivity, and reduce diabetes-related symptoms.

In perspective of Nutrition

Numerous research studies have demonstrated  and support the significant impact of nutrition on diabetes management and outcomes.

Research shows that a well-balanced diet plays a crucial role in achieving and maintaining optimal blood sugar levels, increased insulin sensitivity, better weight management, reduced cardiovascular risk and improving overall well-being for individuals with diabetes. Individual needs are essential as each person’s response to different foods and dietary approaches may vary to achieve and maintain optimal blood sugar levels and overall well-being in diabetes patients.
