Overweight/Obesity

Obesity and overweight are conditions characterized by excess body weight due to an accumulation of excessive body fat. These conditions are considered a global epidemic, affecting millions of people worldwide. BMI, or body mass index, is commonly used as a screening tool to determine whether an individual falls within a healthy weight range based on their height and weight.

BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters (BMI = weight in kg / height in m^2). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines overweight as a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/m^2 and obesity as a BMI equal to or greater than 30 kg/m^2.

Obesity and overweight can result from a combination of factors, including unhealthy dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyles, genetic predisposition, and certain medical conditions. These conditions pose significant health risks, as they are linked to an increased likelihood of developing various chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, certain cancers, sleep apnea, joint problems, and psychological challenges.

Addressing obesity and overweight requires adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity.

What does Chinese Medicine say

In Chinese medicine, obesity is often viewed as a result of an imbalance in the body’s energy, particularly related to the concept of “dampness.” Dampness is one of the pathogenic factors in Chinese medicine that refers to an accumulation of fluids or excessive moisture in the body. It is believed to be caused by poor digestion, overconsumption of greasy or sweet foods, and a sedentary lifestyle, among other factors.

Acupuncture’s potential effects on weight loss and obesity have been explored in several studies. The results have been mixed, with some studies suggesting modest reductions in body weight and BMI with acupuncture treatment.

In perspective of Nutrition

Science consistently supports the significant role of nutrition in weight loss. Numerous research studies have explored the impact of various dietary approaches on weight management but it is important to keep in mind that there is not one size fits all and a personalized plan is highly recommended.
